I was 5 years old, playing in my mother’s closet. I was trying on her shoes, her fancy mink coat my father got her for their anniversary, and tripping over one of her scarves as I tried to walk the “runway” (hall) of our large home. One thing was missing... make up!
So I stumbled into the bathroom and started digging in my mother’s make-up. She was an avid Avon Queen. My mother was considerably older than most of the mother’s of my friends but she was just as pretty. Until she passed away in 2007, she was still known for her bright red lipstick and bright blue eyeshadow despite the clothing color or style she was wearing.
Her signature make up was just that... and I loved her for being, well, HER!
I do not wear much make up and spend most of my days make-up free. Having my eyebrows permanently done by my friend Meredith has streamlined my beauty regimen significantly. I can typically get away with just eyeliner and my “natural” brows. If you have ever had to color in your brows you know how stressful and time-consuming it can be to get them the same shape, angle, thickness... URGH!
However, when I do wear make-up, my “signature” is eyeliner and a tri-color on my lids mostly consisting of one bright color, a white or ivory, and then a darker earth tone. I have never been one to wear lipstick but, ever since high school I have been addicted to Avon’s lipgloss.
Note to self: is there such thing as a “lip gloss hoarder”?
I have been selling Avon since the 1990’s when I was a single mother paying my way through college. While I do not “sell” anymore per se, I keep my account active to give myself a constant boost of energy from my mother.
In fact, TODAY would be my mother's birthday. I bet she is having one hell of a party in the Heavens :)
So in honor of all the positive female role models we have had - mothers, sisters, grandmothers, step mothers, adoptive mothers.... why not go shopping for them or for yourself in their honor?
